In 2023, after three years of growth, there was decline in the SADC coffee extract market, when its value decreased by X% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, coffee extract production dropped slightly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Overall, exports, however, saw temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coffee extract exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2022, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together making up a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to coffee extract exports from South Africa stood at X%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X%), Angola (X%), Zimbabwe (X%) and Tanzania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. While the share of Tanzania (X p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X p.p.) and Angola (X p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Imports in SADC

In 2023, overseas purchases of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2022, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, coffee extract imports amounted to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons) and Angola (X tons), together comprising a X% share of total imports. Mozambique (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Mozambique (X%), Namibia (X%), Zambia (X%), Angola (X%) and Tanzania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of South Africa (X p.p.), Mozambique (X p.p.) and Namibia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of Botswana (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
