Exports in SADC
In 2022, shipments abroad of sugar decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sugar exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Swaziland (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the main exporters of sugar in SADC, together accounting for near X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together committing a X% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritius (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

For the fourth year in a row, SADC recorded growth in supplies from abroad of sugar, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sugar imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) were the major importers of sugar, together creating X% of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.
