Leather And Hide Market Size in the U.S.

In 2021, the U.S. leather and hide market increased by 9.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather and hide production amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, production, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 9.6%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from the U.S.

In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of leather and hide, when their volume increased by 37% to X units. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather and hide exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X units) was the main destination for leather and hide exports from the United States, with a 693% share of total exports. Moreover, leather and hide exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X units), sevenfold. Vietnam (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 91% share.

From 2020 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Mexico totaled +38.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+24.9% per year) and Vietnam (+26.7% per year).

In value terms, Mexico ($X), China ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the largest markets for leather and hide exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 62% of total exports. Italy, Thailand, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Cambodia, Hong Kong SAR, Hungary and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

The Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +251.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.

In 2021, overseas purchases of leather and hide were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leather and hide imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced decline. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy (X units), Brazil (X units) and Mexico (X units) were the main suppliers of leather and hide imports to the United States.

From 2020 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +180.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
