Exports in ASEAN

In 2023, approx. X tons of malt were exported in ASEAN; with an increase of X% compared with 2022 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt exports shrank to $X in 2023. In general, exports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam was the largest exporter of malt in ASEAN, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together achieving a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Singapore (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - each accounted for a X% share of total exports.

Exports from Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X%), Malaysia (X%), Thailand (X%) and Cambodia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Singapore (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Thailand (X p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X p.p.) and Malaysia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore and Vietnam saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest malt supplier in ASEAN, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam totaled X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (X% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2023, which is down by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Malt Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2023, purchases abroad of malt decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after five years of growth. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, malt imports soared to $X in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Vietnam represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at X% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Cambodia (X%), the Philippines (X%), Singapore (X%) and Myanmar (X%). Indonesia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Myanmar (X%), Cambodia (X%) and Thailand (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Philippines (X%) and Singapore (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (X p.p.), Cambodia (X p.p.) and Myanmar (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Vietnam ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, with a combined X% share of total imports. Cambodia, Myanmar, Singapore and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, surging by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
