The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, approx. X ha of cabbage and other brassicas were harvested in ECOWAS; which is down by X% against the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by X%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2022, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, cabbage exports reduced to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

Mali prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cabbage and other brassicas exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. Senegal (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mali (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Senegal saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest cabbage supplier in ECOWAS, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

In 2023, purchases abroad of cabbage and other brassicas decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports declined to $X in 2023. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2023, Cabo Verde (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Mali (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) represented the largest importer of cabbage and other brassicas in ECOWAS, committing X% of total import. It was distantly followed by Gambia (X tons), mixing up a X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
