Germany continued its dominance in the global trade of printing paper, writing paper and paperboard. In 2014, Germany exported 1,679 thousand tonnes of printing paper, writing paper and paperboard totaling 1,807 million USD, 4% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the U.S., where it supplied 11.2% of its total exports on the paper and paperboard market in value terms, accounting for 19.2% of the U.S. total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Finland was a net exporter of printing paper, writing paper and paperboard. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value and physical terms.

Germany and Finland were among the other main global suppliers of printing paper, writing paper and paperboard in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporter from 2007 to 2014 was China (+5.2% per year). China significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.

In 2014, Germany's top 5 trading partners were the U.S., France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Poland, with a combined 40% share of Germany's exports of printing paper, writing paper and paperboard. The share of the U.S. increased (+5 percentage points), while the share of the United Kingdom illustrated negative dynamics (-5 percentage points).
