Despite a sharp slide in 2014 exports, Germany continued its dominance on the global electric locomotive market. In 2014, Germany exported 5.4 thousand tonnes of electric locomotives totaling 275 million USD, 38% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the Netherlands, where it supplied 36% of its total electric locomotive exports in value terms, accounting for around 100% of the Netherlands's total imports.

From 2007 to 2014, Germany was a net exporter of electric locomotives. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced.

China and France were among the other main global suppliers of electric locomotives in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Belgium (+159% per year) and Spain (+134% per year).

In 2014, Germany's top 5 trading partners were the Netherlands, France, the Czech Republic, Austria and Italy, with a combined 92.1% share of Germany's electric locomotive exports. The share of the Netherlands increased significantly (+32.3 percentage points), while the share of Switzerland dropped sharply (-21.1 percentage points).
