According to market research conducted by IndexBox, the global dates market showed modest, but steady growth, rising from 7,240 thousand tonnes in 2007, to 8,043 thousand tonnes in 2015. In value terms, it peaked in 2010, and then fell dramatically over the next two years. From 2013 to 2015, the market value indicated a steady growth, reaching 9,991 million USD in 2015. Driven by population growth in the major consuming countries, the dates market as a whole is projected to continue an upward consumption trend over the next nine years. The market performance is forecast to accelerate, with an anticipated CAGR of +2.0% for the period from 2015 to 2025, which is expected to lead the market volume to 9.6 million tonnes by the end of 2025.

The rates of growth with regard to dates consumption vary greatly amongst the different regions of the world, as with the current levels of per capita consumption. By 2025, it is expected that Asia, particularly the Middle East, will dominate the consumer-regions in terms of consumption volumes on the dates market. By 2025, Asia's total share in the global volume could reach 49%. In all the key consumer-countries concentrated in Asia, such as Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Oman, India, China and Kuwait, both the production and consumption of dates is set to increase.

Africa is forecast to rank second in terms of dates consumption by 2025, with a figure of 47%. In 2025, the key countries in the African region are set to remain mainly as follows: Egypt, Algeria, Sudan, Libya, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, and Tunisia. From 2015-2025, Africa will constitute the most promising region in terms of the growth in dates consumption; population growth will appear as the major driver of this increased consumption. As projected, the average annual rate of consumption growth in Africa over the period under review is set to equal +3.0% per year.

The EU and North American markets essentially benefit from other factors that promote growth. These particular markets are expanding, due to immigration from Africa and Asia; traditionally, dates are popular with incoming immigrants from the region. In addition, dates are classed as a healthy product; consumption figures are buoyed in part from the growing belief in the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Dates as a product are also highly portable, thereby constituting an ideal snack item. The growth in dates consumption on the EU and North American markets will also promote an increase in dates production and exports.

By 2025, the structure of global consumption by country will have remained virtually unchanged. The leading countries by 2025 on the global dates market will remain as follows: Egypt (20%), Iran (15%), Algeria (13%) and Iraq (10%), together accounting for approximately 58% of global consumption. The stable growth in dates consumption in the countries listed above can be explained by their culture of consumption, and the fact that these countries mainly grow dates to satisfy and accommodates their own domestic needs.
