As a result, consumption reached the peak volume of 85M tons. From 2017 to 2023, the growth of the global consumption failed to regain momentum.

The global malt market size reached $47.7B in 2023, approximately equating the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Global consumption peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Consumption By Country

China (14M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of malt consumption, accounting for 17% of total volume. Moreover, malt consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, India (5.3M tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (5.2M tons), with a 6.4% share.

In China, malt consumption expanded at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2013-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+2.9% per year) and the United States (-2.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($6.3B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($3B). It was followed by India.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 85M tons. From 2017 to 2023, global production growth remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt production reduced slightly to $46.2B in 2023 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 7.5% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $46.6B. From 2020 to 2023, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 7.6M tons. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports soared to $5.2B in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 17%. Global imports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports By Country

In 2023, Brazil (1.3M tons), distantly followed by Japan (467K tons), Belgium (412K tons), Mexico (362K tons), the United States (361K tons) and Vietnam (355K tons) represented the key importers of malt (not roasted), together committing 43% of total imports. Thailand (266K tons), the Netherlands (264K tons), Poland (216K tons), Italy (200K tons), Germany (199K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2013 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to malt imports into Brazil stood at +4.7%. At the same time, Cambodia (+9.5%), Poland (+6.1%), Italy (+5.6%), Mexico (+2.6%), Belgium (+2.5%) and the United States (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Vietnam, Thailand, the Netherlands and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2013 to 2023, the share of Brazil increased by +4.3 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($928M) constitutes the largest market for imported malt (not roasted) worldwide, comprising 18% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($379M), with a 7.2% share of global imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 5.5% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil amounted to +5.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+1.5% per year) and Mexico (+4.9% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2023, the average malt import price amounted to $694 per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($812 per ton), while Cambodia ($530 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+3.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Malt (Not Roasted)

Global malt exports contracted slightly to 8M tons in 2023, remaining stable against 2022 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 22%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 8.5M tons. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt exports surged to $5.6B in 2023. Overall, total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +70.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports By Country

The shipments of the twelve major exporters of malt (not roasted), namely France, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, China, the Netherlands, the United States, Spain and Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +27.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($696M), Belgium ($638M) and Germany ($497M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, together accounting for 33% of global exports. Australia, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, China, the Netherlands, the United States, Russia and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 47%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +25.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average malt export price stood at $694 per ton in 2023, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($789 per ton), while Spain ($518 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
