Global banana imports amounted to 20,730 thousand tonnes in 2015, approximately equating the previous year level. Overall, the global banana imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +6% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global banana imports reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, global banana imports amounted to $14,002 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global banana imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +3.9%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Banana Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the banana imports in absolute volumes was the United States (4,960 thousand tonnes), accounting for 24% of global imports. It was followed by Germany (1,401 thousand tonnes), with a share of 7% of global imports. Moreover, banana imports in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Germany (1,401 thousand tonnes), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Belgium with a share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of banana imports in the United States stood at +1.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Germany (-0.3% per year) and Belgium (+0.1% per year).

In value terms, the country with the largest volume of imports of banana in absolute volumes was the United States (2,598 million USD), making up 19% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Belgium (1,165 million USD), with a share of 8% of global imports. Moreover, banana imports in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Belgium (1,165 million USD), twofold. It was followed by Germany with a share of 7%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of banana imports in the United States was at +6.9%. The remaining importing countries experienced the following average annual growth rates: Belgium (-3.0% per year) and Germany (-0.7% per year).
