In value terms, lemon and lime production rose slightly to $20.7B in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $22B in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were India (3.8M tons), Mexico (3.1M tons) and China (2.6M tons), together accounting for 44% of global production. Argentina, Brazil, Turkey, the United States, Spain, South Africa, Iran, Italy, Sudan and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Yield

The global average lemon and lime yield contracted modestly to 16 tons per ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the year before. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 5.6% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of 17 tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the average lemon and lime yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The UK (147K tons), Poland (137K tons), the United Arab Emirates (122K tons), Canada (110K tons), Italy (108K tons), Spain (74K tons) and Romania (60K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lemon and lime imports into the United States stood at +5.4%. At the same time, Iraq (+40.1%), the Netherlands (+8.4%), the United Arab Emirates (+6.2%), Romania (+4.9%), Germany (+4.2%), Poland (+4.1%), the UK (+3.1%), France (+2.3%), Canada (+2.0%), Spain (+2.0%) and Russia (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +40.1% from 2012-2022. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Iraq (+5 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.9 p.p.) and the United States (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Italy (-1.7 p.p.) and Russia (-2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($906M) constitutes the largest market for imported lemons and limes worldwide, comprising 22% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($414M), with a 10% share of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.3% share.

In the United States, lemon and lime imports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+8.9% per year) and Germany (+7.0% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average lemon and lime import price amounted to $1,098 per ton, rising by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 17%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,246 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,709 per ton), while Iraq ($273 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +48.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4M tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports reduced slightly to $3.9B in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +17.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $3.9B in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Mexico (706K tons), Spain (648K tons), Turkey (594K tons) and South Africa (557K tons) represented roughly 64% of total exports in 2022. The Netherlands (263K tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 6.7% share, followed by Argentina (6.5%). The following exporters - Brazil (156K tons), the United States (125K tons) and Portugal (63K tons) - together made up 8.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($848M), Mexico ($763M) and the Netherlands ($428M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 52% of global exports. South Africa, Turkey, the United States, Argentina, Brazil and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Portugal, with a CAGR of +28.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average lemon and lime export price amounted to $993 per ton, picking up by 2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,235 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,627 per ton), while Turkey ($457 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
