Which Country Produces the Most Cranberries in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the cranberry output was the United States (375 thousand tonnes), accounting for 57% of global production. Moreover, cranberry output in the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Canada (186 thousand tonnes), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Chile with a share of 13%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of cranberry producton in the United States stood at +3.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Canada (+13.7% per year) and Chile (+18.3% per year).

Global Cranberries Production

Global cranberry production amounted to 658 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, the global cranberry output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +6.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +21% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cranberry production attained its maximum volume of 658 thousand tonnes in 2012. From 2013 to 2015, the total cranberry output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global cranberry production was primarily driven by disposable income growth, population growth, and diversification of diet. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the cranberry output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a noticeable contraction of the yield figures.

The world cranberry harvested area amounted to 64 thousand ha in 2015, which was 13.2% more than the previous year figure. The cranberry harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +10.9% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, recorded some sharp fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total cranberry harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand for globally.
