In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of date production were Egypt (1,463 thousand tonnes), Iran (1,201 thousand tonnes), Algeria (1,002 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 45% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of date production among the main producing countries was attained by Algeria (+8.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global Dates Production

Global date production amounted to 8,199 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +1.9% against the previous year level. Overall, the global date output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +8% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global date production attained its maximum volume of 8,199 thousand tonnes in 2007. From 2008 to 2015, the total date output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global date production was primarily driven by population growth and diversification of diet. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the date output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a measured expansion of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world date harvested area amounted to 1,207 thousand ha in 2015, which was 3.8% more than the previous year figure. The date harvested area indicated a slight increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +0.4% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total date harvested area peaked in 2010, falling back in the following year. From 2011 to 2015, the total date harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
