In 2015, the countries with the highest levels of flax fiber production were Belgium (77 thousand tonnes), France (70 thousand tonnes), China (46 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 62% of total output.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of flax fiber production among the main producing countries was attained by Belgium (+23.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the output figures.

Global Flax Fiber Production

Global flax fiber production amounted to 309 thousand tonnes in 2015, declining by -3.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global flax fiber output pursued a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures decreased at an average annual rate of -6.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +26% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global flax fiber production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, global flax fiber production was buoyed by population growth, disposable income growth, and growth of clothes consumption. These key factors are to remain relevant with regard to flax fiber output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a noticeable curtailment of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world flax fiber harvested area amounted to 178 thousand ha in 2015, which was -8.0% less than the previous year figure. The flax fiber harvested area indicated a pronounced contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -7.7% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total flax fiber harvested area peaked in 2007, declining in the following year. From 2008 to 2015, the total flax fiber harvested area fluctuated at lower levels.
