Which Country Produces the Most Mushrooms and Truffles in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the mushroom and truffle output was China (8,181 thousand tonnes), accounting for 76% of global production. Moreover, mushroom and truffle output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, the United States (444 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Italy with a share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of mushroom and truffle producton in China stood at +9.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+2.7% per year) and Italy (+18.0% per year).

Global Mushrooms and Truffles Production

Global mushroom and truffle production amounted to 10,698 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +3.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global mushroom and truffle output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +7.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +14% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global mushroom and truffle production attained its maximum volume of 10,698 thousand tonnes in 2008. From 2009 to 2015, the total mushroom and truffle output growth failed to regain its strength.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global mushroom and truffle production was primarily driven by population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the mushroom and truffle output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a robust expansion of the harvested area and a moderate improvement of the yield figures.

The world mushroom and truffle harvested area amounted to 30 thousand ha in 2015, which was 7.4% more than the previous year figure. The mushroom and truffle harvested area indicated a noticeable increase over the period under review, representing a compound annual growth rate of +6.5% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern, however, indicated some mild fluctuations over the recent years. Over the period under review, the total mushroom and truffle harvested area peaked in 2015, and is likely to continue its expansion in the immediate term, following rising demand over the globe.
