Which Country Produces the Most Pears in the World?

In 2015, the country with the largest volume of the pear output was China (18,461 thousand tonnes), accounting for 69% of global production. Moreover, pear output in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest producer, Italy (753 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the United States with a share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of pear producton in China stood at +4.4%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Italy (-1.3% per year) and the United States (-0.8% per year).

Global Pears Production

Global pear production amounted to 26,616 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +3.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global pear output pursued a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total output figures increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +6% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global pear production reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Over the analyzed period, an increase in global pear production was primarily driven by disposable income growth and population growth. Furthermore, these key drivers are expected to continue promoting the pear output in the immediate term. This general positive trend was largely conditioned by a slight curtailment of the harvested area and solid gains of the yield figures.

The world pear harvested area amounted to 1,580 thousand ha in 2015, which was almost equal to the previous year figure. The pear harvested area indicated a small contraction over the period under review, declining by an average annual rate of -0.1% from 2007 to 2015. This trend pattern was relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the total pear harvested area peaked in 2013, falling back in the following year.
