Overall, consumption, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 2.3%. Global consumption peaked at 4.1M tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In value terms, the largest bleached sulphite pulp markets worldwide were Germany ($657M), the United States ($381M) and the Czech Republic ($255M), with a combined 52% share of the global market. Norway, Argentina, Austria, France, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sweden and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at 3.9M tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bleached sulphite pulp production expanded remarkably to $2.2B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 8.6% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $3.2B in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Production By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Canada (674K tons), Germany (555K tons) and Austria (226K tons), with a combined 60% share of global production. Norway, France, Brazil and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Imports
World Imports of Bleached Sulphite Pulp
In 2022, supplies from abroad of bleached sulphite pulp increased by 27% to 1.1M tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after six years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, bleached sulphite pulp imports skyrocketed to $673M in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at $808M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports By Country
The United States prevails in imports structure, recording 701K tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Germany (66K tons) and Indonesia (50K tons), together constituting an 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Italy (28K tons), Canada (28K tons), Turkey (25K tons), Austria (23K tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (21K tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bleached sulphite pulp imports into the United States stood at +12.6%. At the same time, Turkey (+13.1%), Indonesia (+8.9%) and Canada (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +13.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-5.8%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-5.9%), Austria (-7.3%) and Italy (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United States (+43 p.p.), Indonesia (+2.5 p.p.) and Turkey (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.8 p.p.), Austria (-2.7 p.p.), Italy (-4 p.p.) and Germany (-5.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($237M) constitutes the largest market for imported bleached sulphite pulp worldwide, comprising 35% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($90M), with a 13% share of global imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States stood at +5.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-5.1% per year) and Indonesia (+11.9% per year).
Import Prices By Country
The average bleached sulphite pulp import price stood at $616 per ton in 2022, falling by -3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $961 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,367 per ton), while Canada ($154 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports
World Exports of Bleached Sulphite Pulp
In 2022, global bleached sulphite pulp exports surged to 910K tons, jumping by 34% on the previous year. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, bleached sulphite pulp exports soared to $500M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $669M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports By Country
In 2022, Canada (688K tons) represented the largest exporter of bleached sulphite pulp, achieving 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (117K tons), mixing up a 13% share of total exports. The United States (24K tons), Brazil (23K tons), Norway (19K tons) and Austria (15K tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Canada was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bleached sulphite pulp exports, with a CAGR of +12.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Germany (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Norway (-5.4%), Austria (-6.3%), the United States (-8.5%) and Brazil (-11.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Canada (+50 p.p.) and Germany (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Austria (-1.7 p.p.), Norway (-1.8 p.p.), the United States (-4.2 p.p.) and Brazil (-6.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest bleached sulphite pulp supplying countries worldwide were Canada ($237M), Germany ($167M) and Norway ($27M), with a combined 86% share of global exports.
Canada, with a CAGR of +5.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average bleached sulphite pulp export price amounted to $550 per ton, reducing by -8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 9.1%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $790 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
