Buckwheat Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2023
The average buckwheat export price stood at $1,866 per ton in June 2023, rising by 3.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 206% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $4,310 per ton. From January 2023 to June 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Romania ($2,617 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($1,609 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Buckwheat Price in Hungary (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average buckwheat import price amounted to $999 per ton, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, buckwheat import price increased by +51.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($2,846 per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($748 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+32.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Buckwheat Exports in Hungary
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of buckwheat, when their volume decreased by -47.3% to 314 tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year.
In value terms, buckwheat exports shrank dramatically to $402K in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 47%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $611K, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

For the fourth year in a row, Hungary recorded growth in overseas purchases of buckwheat, which increased by 27% to 445 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +56.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
