In 2022, the average butter and ghee import price amounted to $6,403 per ton, jumping by 39% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter and ghee import price increased by +54.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from France ($7,374 per ton) and Belgium ($7,085 per ton), while the price for Poland ($6,132 per ton) and Ireland ($6,170 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Butter and Ghee Price in Germany (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average butter and ghee export price amounted to $6,839 per ton, jumping by 34% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter and ghee export price increased by +59.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Italy ($7,743 per ton) and Slovakia ($7,518 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($6,034 per ton) and Denmark ($6,426 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Butter and Ghee Imports in Germany
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of butter and ghee, when their volume decreased by -29.4% to 144K tons. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year.
In value terms, butter and ghee imports fell modestly to $923M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $940M, and then fell in the following year.
