Leather of bovine and equine animals (4.5B square meters) constituted the product with the largest volume of production, comprising approx. 77% of total volume. It was distantly followed by sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather (186M square meters), constituting a 6.3% share of total imports. Composition leather (98M square meters) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to leather of bovine and equine animals imports of stood at -1.3%. In 2022, the average leather import price amounted to $5 per square meter, surging by 8.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $6.4 per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major imported products. In 2022, the product with the highest price was chamois, patent and combination leather ($17 per square meter), while the price for composition leather ($3.7 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

The average leather import price stood at $5 per square meter in 2022, picking up by 8.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. Global import price peaked at $6.4 per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($7.9 per square meter), while Italy ($2 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

Global leather exports fell to 2.6B square meters in 2022, waning by -8.7% on the previous year. In general, exports recorded a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 30%. The global exports peaked at 4.4B square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leather exports declined to $14B in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $27.6B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports By Country

In 2022, Brazil (657M square meters) represented the key exporter of leather, generating 25% of total exports. Italy (243M square meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the United States (236M square meters). All these countries together took approx. 19% share of total exports. Paraguay (112M square meters), China (82M square meters), New Zealand (72M square meters), Australia (69M square meters), Poland (65M square meters), Spain (56M square meters), Thailand (53M square meters), Germany (50M square meters), Turkey (49M square meters) and India (49M square meters) held a little share of total exports.

Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of leather. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2012-2022. Turkey, Australia and Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, Italy ($3.3B) remains the largest leather supplier worldwide, comprising 23% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($1.2B), with an 8.6% share of global exports. It was followed by China, with a 6.6% share.
