The global quinoa market is projected to grow steadily over the next eight years, with increases in both volume and value terms. Peru remains the largest consumer and producer of quinoa, while the United States dominates in imports. Spain stands out with significant growth in exports.

Consumption

World Consumption of Quinoa

In 2022, global quinoa consumption was estimated at 170K tons, rising by 14% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -0.1% against 2020 indices. Global consumption peaked at 179K tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The global quinoa market size skyrocketed to $437M in 2022, growing by 15% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption continues to indicate temperate growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $831M. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the global market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Consumption By Country

Peru (68K tons) remains the largest quinoa consuming country worldwide, accounting for 40% of total volume. Moreover, quinoa consumption in Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, the United States (27K tons), threefold. Bolivia (22K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Peru stood at +7.3%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: the United States (+10.1% per year) and Bolivia (-1.2% per year).

In value terms, Peru ($158M) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bolivia ($72M). It was followed by the United States.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Peru stood at +4.9%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of market growth: Bolivia (-1.0% per year) and the United States (+8.0% per year).

The countries with the highest levels of quinoa per capita consumption in 2022 were Peru (2,019 kg per 1000 persons), Bolivia (1,866 kg per 1000 persons) and Canada (134 kg per 1000 persons).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +89.6%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Production

World Production of Quinoa

In 2022, approx. 167K tons of quinoa were produced worldwide; with an increase of 2.9% on the year before. Over the period under review, the total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -7.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 188K tons. From 2015 to 2022, global production growth remained at a lower figure. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by resilient growth of the harvested area and a measured increase in yield figures.

In value terms, quinoa production surged to $391M in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 106% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $1.1B. From 2015 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of quinoa production was Peru (113K tons), comprising approx. 68% of total volume. Moreover, quinoa production in Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bolivia (45K tons), threefold.

In Peru, quinoa production increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bolivia (-1.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+26.5% per year).

Yield

In 2022, the global average yield of quinoa reached 860 kg per ha, surging by 1.9% compared with 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 41%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of 1 tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the average quinoa yield remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Harvested Area

In 2022, approx. 194K ha of quinoa were harvested worldwide; approximately equating the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. The global harvested area peaked at 198K ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports

World Imports of Quinoa

In 2022, approx. 99K tons of quinoa were imported worldwide; growing by 2.8% against 2021 figures. In general, imports showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 111K tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, quinoa imports dropped modestly to $228M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $385M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports By Country

The United States was the main importing country with an import of around 30K tons, which recorded 31% of total imports. Canada (9.5K tons) held a 9.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (6.7%), the Netherlands (5.1%), Germany (4.9%) and Italy (4.7%). China (3.4K tons), Spain (3K tons), the UK (2.5K tons), Australia (2.3K tons), Israel (1.8K tons), Austria (1.8K tons) and Belgium (1.8K tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, China (+90.4%), Spain (+34.8%), Germany (+32.9%), Austria (+27.9%), Belgium (+26.4%), Italy (+23.3%), the Netherlands (+12.0%), Israel (+9.8%), the UK (+9.1%), Australia (+8.3%), Canada (+8.2%) and France (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +90.4% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany, China, Italy and Spain increased by +4, +3.5, +2.8 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($69M) constitutes the largest market for imported quinoa worldwide, comprising 30% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($23M), with a 10% share of global imports. It was followed by France, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States amounted to +5.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+2.7% per year) and France (+3.1% per year).

Import Prices By Country

The average quinoa import price stood at $2,308 per ton in 2022, falling by -5.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 46%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $6,205 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Austria ($2,526 per ton) and Canada ($2,450 per ton), while China ($2,024 per ton) and Spain ($2,113 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+0.1%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.

Exports

World Exports of Quinoa

In 2022, the amount of quinoa exported worldwide reduced to 96K tons, shrinking by -12% against the year before. Overall, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -20.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 46%. The global exports peaked at 120K tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, quinoa exports reduced to $209M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at $464M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports By Country

Peru was the major exporter of quinoa in the world, with the volume of exports resulting at 46K tons, which was near 48% of total exports in 2022. Bolivia (22K tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Netherlands (6.6K tons) and Canada (4.3K tons). All these countries together held near 35% share of total exports. The United States (3.1K tons), Spain (2.5K tons), Germany (2K tons) and Italy (1.4K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to quinoa exports from Peru stood at +15.6%. At the same time, Spain (+69.1%), Canada (+65.0%), Italy (+27.1%), the Netherlands (+15.1%) and Germany (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +69.1% from 2012-2022. The United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Bolivia (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Peru (+23 p.p.), Canada (+4.4 p.p.), the Netherlands (+3.2 p.p.) and Spain (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the United States and Bolivia saw its share reduced by -4.4% and -34.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Peru ($89M), Bolivia ($46M) and the Netherlands ($17M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 73% of global exports. The United States, Germany, Canada, Spain and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +55.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average quinoa export price stood at $2,179 per ton in 2022, reducing by -3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 39% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $5,462 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($3,403 per ton), while Canada ($1,467 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.6%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
