Salt Price in Peru (CIF) - 2021
The average salt import price stood at $88.7 per ton in April 2020, increasing by 31% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $135 per ton in February 2020; however, from March 2020 to April 2020, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($426 per ton), while the price for Free Zones ($40.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2020 to April 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Salt Price in Peru (FOB) - 2021
In April 2020, the average salt export price amounted to $112 per ton, falling by -15% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2020 when the average export price increased by 582% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $132 per ton, and then contracted notably in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($198 per ton), while the average price for exports to Colombia ($96.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2020 to April 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+122.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Salt Imports in Peru
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride, when their volume decreased by -4.2% to 89K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 15%.
In value terms, salt imports fell to $7.2M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $8.1M, and then fell in the following year.

Salt Exports in Peru
In 2022, shipments abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride increased by 23% to 152K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a precipitous decrease.
In value terms, salt exports totaled $4.3M in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a sharp setback.
