Unmanufactured Tobacco Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022
The average unmanufactured tobacco export price stood at $8,240 per ton in 2022, picking up by 3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($11,226 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($4,361 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Unmanufactured Tobacco Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average unmanufactured tobacco import price amounted to $6,470 per ton, increasing by 34% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a notable increase from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.0% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, unmanufactured tobacco import price decreased by -5.6% against June 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 50% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $6,851 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($13,415 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($638 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Unmanufactured Tobacco Exports in the United States
In 2022, approx. 105K tons of tobacco (unmanufactured) were exported from the United States; approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 8%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 105K tons, leveling off in the following year.
In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports expanded slightly to $862M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
