The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 103%. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 2.9M units. From 2016 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wind powered generator production contracted to $33.3B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 455% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $143.4B. From 2015 to 2022, global production growth remained at a lower figure.
Production By Country
The country with the largest volume of wind powered generator production was Germany (359K units), accounting for 38% of total volume. Moreover, wind powered generator production in Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hong Kong SAR (178K units), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Cyprus (82K units), with an 8.6% share.
In Germany, wind powered generator production plunged by an average annual rate of -6.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (+0.5% per year) and Cyprus (+0.6% per year).
Imports
World Imports of Wind Powered Generating Sets
In 2022, the amount of wind powered generating sets imported worldwide skyrocketed to 2.4M units, jumping by 20% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 198%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at 7.5M units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wind powered generator imports declined significantly to $5.6B in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $8B in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports By Country
Bosnia and Herzegovina was the main importer of wind powered generating sets in the world, with the volume of imports amounting to 862K units, which was approx. 36% of total imports in 2022. Indonesia (225K units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.5% share, followed by Honduras (7.9%), Canada (6.7%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (6.3%). Croatia (84K units), Mexico (83K units), Greece (77K units), France (76K units), Spain (67K units), Israel (53K units), Pakistan (49K units) and Vietnam (41K units) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Bosnia and Herzegovina increased at an average annual rate of +110.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Israel (+119.9%), Pakistan (+108.2%), Honduras (+77.1%), Vietnam (+48.6%), Indonesia (+38.9%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+30.4%), Canada (+26.0%), Spain (+22.5%), France (+18.6%) and Greece (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +119.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mexico (-7.3%) and Croatia (-24.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bosnia and Herzegovina (+36 p.p.), Indonesia (+9.2 p.p.), Honduras (+7.9 p.p.), Canada (+6.3 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+6 p.p.), France (+2.8 p.p.), Spain (+2.6 p.p.), Greece (+2.3 p.p.), Israel (+2.2 p.p.), Pakistan (+2.1 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Croatia (-31.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($623M), Pakistan ($447M) and Canada ($430M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 27% of global imports. Mexico, France, Vietnam, Spain, Greece, Israel, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Honduras and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.
Among the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +88.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average wind powered generator import price amounted to $2,340 per unit, falling by -41.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 351%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $4,303 per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($9,118 per unit), while Indonesia ($3.8 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+27.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports
World Exports of Wind Powered Generating Sets
In 2022, overseas shipments of wind powered generating sets were finally on the rise to reach 160K units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 110%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.8M units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wind powered generator exports contracted dramatically to $5.2B in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 37%. The global exports peaked at $8.8B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports By Country
In 2022, China (44K units), distantly followed by Indonesia (29K units), Belgium (16K units), Mexico (15K units), Spain (11K units), the Czech Republic (9.7K units) and India (7.2K units) were the largest exporters of wind powered generating sets, together achieving 82% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +104.1%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($998M) remains the largest wind powered generator supplier worldwide, comprising 19% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($382M), with a 7.3% share of global exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6.1% share.
In China, wind powered generator exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+24.2% per year) and Spain (-12.3% per year).
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average wind powered generator export price amounted to $32,621 per unit, with a decrease of -32.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 1,326%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $64,185 per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($52,972 per unit), while Indonesia ($34 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+8.0%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
