South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Ghana (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kenya (X%).
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Kenya (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Ghana (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (X p.p.) and Kenya (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest preserved salmon supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved salmon imports rose to $X in 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2023, Libya (X tons) represented the main importer of salmon (prepared or preserved), committing X% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) took an X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (X%), Namibia (X%) and Togo (X%). The following importers - Algeria (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.
Imports into Libya increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Togo (X%), Mauritius (X%), Algeria (X%) and Egypt (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Namibia (X%) and South Africa (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Libya (X p.p.), Mauritius (X p.p.), Togo (X p.p.) and Algeria (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Namibia and South Africa saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest preserved salmon importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), Namibia ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for X% of total imports. Mauritius, Egypt, Algeria and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
