Ghana (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an X% share.
In Nigeria, vegetable production increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (X% per year) and Ghana (X% per year).
In 2023, the average yield of vegetables in Africa declined slightly to X tons per ha, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of the vegetable yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2023, the total area harvested in terms of vegetables production in Africa dropped to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2022, and then declined in the following year.

For the fifth consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of vegetables, which increased by X% to X tons in 2023. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, vegetable exports expanded sharply to $X in 2023. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of vegetables, namely Egypt, Morocco and Ethiopia, represented more than half of total export. Tanzania (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an X% share, followed by South Africa (X%) and Mozambique (X%). Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest vegetable supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and Ethiopia ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Among the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the last eleven years, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Imports by Country
In 2023, Egypt (X tons), distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) were the main importers of vegetables, together mixing up X% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Uganda (X%), Mozambique (X%), Morocco (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Mauritania (X%), Guinea (X%), Somalia (X%), Sudan (X%) and Kenya (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uganda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Senegal, Djibouti and Algeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Morocco (X p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.), Mozambique (X p.p.) and Uganda (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Djibouti, Senegal and Algeria saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vegetables in Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with an X% share of total imports. It was followed by Somalia, with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt stood at X%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (X% per year) and Somalia (X% per year).

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Djibouti (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
