According to market research conducted by IndexBox, global production of wood-based panels was estimated at 387,737 thousand cubic meters in 2015, which was 1,399 thousand cubic meters more than in 2013. There was an annual increase of +3.7% in physical terms for the period from 2007 to 2014.

In value terms, global wood-based panel production value dropped to 155,886 million USD in 2015, with mixed dynamics over the last few years. The decrease over the period from 2008 to 2009 was followed by strong growth to 2014.
In physical terms, plywood (38%), particle board (28%), and MDF (24%) were the leading types of global wood-based panels in 2015, followed by veneer sheets (4%), hardboard, and insulating board (3% each).

In China, plywood was even more popular, representing 54% of total wood-based panel output in 2015. It was followed by MDF (30%), particle board (11%), hardboard (3%), and veneer sheets (2%).
Particle board accounted for the highest share (47% in 2015) of U.S wood-based panel manufacturing, followed by plywood (27%), insulating board (14%), MDF (9%), veneer sheets, and hardboard (1% each).
In Russia, particle boards held a major share of wood-based panel production (48%) in 2015, leaving room for production of plywood (27%) and MDF (16%), which were followed by veneer sheets (6%) and hardboard (4%).
In Canada, particle board production maintained a significant share of total wood-based panel output at 69%. It was followed by plywood (15%), MDF (8%), veneer sheets (5%), insulating board (3%), and hardboard (1%).
In Germany, particle board represented roughly 55% of wood-based panel production. The balance of the output was distributed between hardboard (19%), MDF, and insulating board (12% each). Plywood and veneer sheets took 1% of Germany's total output each.

China was the largest producer of wood-based panels in absolute volumes, at 191,225 thousand cubic meters. It was followed by the U.S. (33,797 thousand cubic meters), Russia (13,606 thousand cubic meters), Canada (12,789 thousand cubic meters), Germany (12,230 thousand cubic meters), and Brazil (11,804 thousand cubic meters). China attained the most notable growth rates in wood-based panel production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2015 (+10.9% per year), while Russia (+3.3%) and Brazil (+2.2%) experienced more modest paces of growth. The U.S., Canada, and Germany showed negative dynamics.

However, Canada was responsible for 37% of the increase in global wood-based panel production from 2014 to 2015. 27% of the increase is attributed to Russia, compared with 3% of the increase attributable to the U.S.
