Moreover, tea production in Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Malawi (X tons), more than tenfold. Rwanda (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume in Kenya stood at X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Malawi (X% per year) and Rwanda (X% per year).

In 2023, the amount of tea exported in Africa was estimated at X tons, stabilizing at the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2023 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, tea exports stood at $X in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Kenya prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), achieving a X% share of total exports. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, tea imports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2023, Egypt (X tons), distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) were the major importers of tea, together achieving X% of total imports. South Africa (X tons), Libya (X tons), Mali (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Benin (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Cameroon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
