EU smart card production showed mixed dynamics over the period from 2007 to 2014, rising from 2,000 million items in 2007 to 2,492 million items in 2014. It expanded with a CAGR of 3.2%. In value terms, EU production on the smart card market decreased to 2,461 million EUR in 2014, falling by 0.4% annually.

The countries with the largest production of smart cards in absolute volumes were France (904 million items), Germany (760 million items), the United Kingdom (208 million items) and Spain (161 million items).

Positive dynamics in smart card production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2014 were recorded in France (+5.2% per year), while for the other three EU leaders (Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain) the pace of growth was more modest.

France dominated in EU smart card production and trade. In 2014, France exported 52% of its total smart card output. Of this amount, 16% was supplied to the United Kingdom, where France's smart cards held a 22% share of total the United Kingdom's imports.
