Japanese Honey Bee Honey

Japanese honey bees, also known as Apis cerana japonica, are known for their unique method of producing honey. While most honey bees rely on floral nectar to make honey, Japanese honey bees have an additional source for honey production – the Asian giant hornet.

The Asian giant hornet, or Vespa mandarinia, is a formidable predator that poses a threat to honey bee colonies. However, Japanese honey bees have developed a remarkable defense mechanism known as the 'hot defensive bee ball.' When a hornet enters their hive, a group of bees surrounds the intruder and forms a tight ball around it. Through rapid vibrating movements, the bees generate heat, raising the temperature within the ball to a lethal level for the hornet. This unique defense mechanism is crucial for protecting the hive and the honey bee population.

Interestingly, the bees' strategy also involves utilizing the hornet to produce a special type of honey known as 'hornet honey' or 'giant hornet honey.' When a hornet is caught by the bee ball, it secretes a strong-smelling alarm pheromone to attract its nestmates. Japanese honey bees take advantage of this by spreading the pheromone throughout the hive. In response, the worker bees start collecting and storing the honey, which has a distinct flavor and aroma due to the presence of the alarm pheromone.

Hornet honey is not commonly consumed by humans due to its strong smell and association with the predatory insect. However, it has its own unique properties and is highly valued in certain traditional Japanese practices. In traditional Japanese medicine, hornet honey has been used for its perceived health benefits, including boosting energy levels and enhancing immune function.

While the production of hornet honey is a fascinating aspect of Japanese honey bee behavior, it is important to note that the majority of honey produced by Japanese honey bees comes from floral nectar, just like other honey bee species. Floral honey is the primary type of honey produced by these bees and is widely consumed and cherished for its delicious taste and numerous health benefits.
