In 2022, the highest levels of kiwi fruit per capita consumption was registered in Greece (13 kg per person), followed by Italy (5.4 kg per person), Chile (4.6 kg per person) and Spain (3 kg per person), while the world average per capita consumption of kiwi fruit was estimated at 0.6 kg per person.

In value terms, kiwi fruit production shrank modestly to $7.9B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +58.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 33%. Global production peaked at $8B in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of kiwi fruit production was China (2.4M tons), accounting for 51% of total volume. Moreover, kiwi fruit production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, New Zealand (604K tons), fourfold. Italy (523K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 11% share.

In China, kiwi fruit production expanded at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: New Zealand (+2.1% per year) and Italy (+3.1% per year).

Yield

In 2022, the global average yield of kiwi fruits stood at 16 tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the average kiwi fruit yield attained the peak level at 17 tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.

Harvested Area

The global kiwi fruit harvested area totaled 286K ha in 2022, leveling off at the previous year's figure. In 2022, overseas purchases of kiwi fruits decreased by -11.2% to 1.6M tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 15%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $4.2B, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of kiwi fruit imports in 2022 were Belgium (197K tons), Spain (141K tons), China (118K tons), Japan (112K tons), Germany (100K tons), the Netherlands (91K tons), the United States (90K tons), France (72K tons), Italy (65K tons), India (46K tons), South Korea (44K tons) and Brazil (33K tons), together recording 70% of total import. Taiwan (Chinese) (33K tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +23.7%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest kiwi fruit importing markets worldwide were China ($492M), Belgium ($385M) and Japan ($381M), together comprising 34% of global imports. Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, the United States, France, South Korea, Italy, Taiwan (Chinese), India and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.

India, with a CAGR of +21.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average kiwi fruit import price stood at $2,365 per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. In value terms, kiwi fruit exports fell to $3.6B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.7% against 2013 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $4B, and then declined in the following year.

Exports By Country

In 2022, New Zealand (589K tons) was the key exporter of kiwi fruits, committing 37% of total exports. Italy (269K tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Greece (12%), Belgium (10%), Chile (8.4%) and Iran (4.6%). The Netherlands (41K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from New Zealand increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Iran (+6.8%), Belgium (+5.2%), Greece (+4.7%) and the Netherlands (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iran emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +6.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Italy (-2.9%) and Chile (-4.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of New Zealand, Belgium, Greece and Iran increased by +7.4, +3.3, +3.3 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, New Zealand ($1.7B) remains the largest kiwi fruit supplier worldwide, comprising 47% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($532M), with a 15% share of global exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 15% share.

In New Zealand, kiwi fruit exports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+2.4% per year) and Belgium (+8.2% per year).

Export Prices By Country

The average kiwi fruit export price stood at $2,229 per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $2,251 per ton in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($3,178 per ton), while Iran ($380 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
