Consumption By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were China (2.1M cubic meters), the United States (1.3M cubic meters) and India (550K cubic meters), with a combined 27% share of global consumption. Ireland, Japan, the UK, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, Belgium, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the main consuming countries, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +25.3%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($610M) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($221M). It was followed by India.

In China, the preservative-treated rough wood market expanded at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United States (+2.1% per year) and India (+0.4% per year).

In 2022, the highest levels of preservative-treated rough wood per capita consumption was registered in Ireland (105 cubic meters per 1000 persons), followed by Belgium (29 cubic meters per 1000 persons), the UK (6.9 cubic meters per 1000 persons) and the United States (3.9 cubic meters per 1000 persons), while the world average per capita consumption of preservative-treated rough wood was estimated at 1.9 cubic meters per 1000 persons.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of the preservative-treated rough wood per capita consumption in Ireland totaled +11.9%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of per capita consumption growth: Belgium (+24.7% per year) and the UK (+9.4% per year).

Production

World Production of Preservative-Treated Rough Wood

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was decline in production of preservative-treated rough wood, when its volume decreased by -4.4% to 16M cubic meters. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 17M cubic meters in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood production reached $3.5B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 14%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $3.9B. From 2015 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (2M cubic meters), the United States (1.2M cubic meters) and Ireland (790K cubic meters), together accounting for 24% of global production. Lithuania, France, the Netherlands, India, Japan, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Brazil and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +27.4%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Preservative-Treated Rough Wood

After five years of growth, purchases abroad of preservative-treated rough wood decreased by -12.8% to 3.2M cubic meters in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 35%. Global imports peaked at 3.6M cubic meters in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood imports expanded to $577M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports By Country

In 2022, Slovakia (434K cubic meters), Belgium (363K cubic meters), the United States (315K cubic meters) and the UK (270K cubic meters) was the largest importer of preservative-treated rough wood in the world, making up 44% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (149K cubic meters), creating a 4.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Spain (138K cubic meters), the Netherlands (133K cubic meters), Poland (126K cubic meters), France (74K cubic meters), China (70K cubic meters), Latvia (68K cubic meters), Denmark (57K cubic meters) and Botswana (57K cubic meters) - together made up 23% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +70.3%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preservative-treated rough wood importing markets worldwide were the UK ($76M), the United States ($71M) and the Netherlands ($64M), together comprising 36% of global imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +50.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average preservative-treated rough wood import price amounted to $182 per cubic meter, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $296 per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($479 per cubic meter), while Belgium ($40 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+16.1%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.

Exports

World Exports of Preservative-Treated Rough Wood

In 2022, global exports of preservative-treated rough wood shrank modestly to 5M cubic meters, reducing by -2.4% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at 5.1M cubic meters in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood exports amounted to $703M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +103.1% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 46%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports By Country

The shipments of the twelve major exporters of preservative-treated rough wood, namely Lithuania, the Netherlands, France, Spain, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Ireland, Canada, the United States, Slovakia, Latvia and Belgium, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +286.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preservative-treated rough wood supplying countries worldwide were the Netherlands ($73M), Canada ($72M) and the United States ($72M), together comprising 31% of global exports. Ireland, Lithuania, Belgium, Sweden, France, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

Among the main exporting countries, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +289.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average preservative-treated rough wood export price amounted to $141 per cubic meter, picking up by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 27% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $284 per cubic meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($336 per cubic meter), while Spain ($40 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
