In 2022, the average import price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses amounted to $3,448 per ton, which is down by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 15%. The import price peaked at $4,201 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($7,688 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($1,683 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses stood at $8,422 per ton in November 2023, dropping by -5.4% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated perceptible growth from November 2022 to November 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on November 2023 figures, export price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses decreased by -5.4% against October 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 43% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $10,225 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to November 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($18,816 per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia ($1,606 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belarus (+21.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses decreased by -8.7% to 15K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 17K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses fell to $50M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year.

Overall, total exports indicated tangible growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last three-year period.
