Garlic Production in France - 2022
In 2022, production of garlic decreased by -32.6% to 19K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, production recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak volume at 30K tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure. Garlic output in France indicated a mild downturn, which was largely conditioned by a slight decrease of the harvested area and a deep contraction in yield figures.
In value terms, garlic production stood at $116M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 93% against the previous year. Garlic production peaked at $125M in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Garlic Harvested Area in France - 2022
In 2022, the harvested area of garlic in France rose significantly to 4.4K ha, growing by 5.3% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated a prominent expansion from 2017 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last five-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic harvested area increased by +55.0% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 32%. The garlic harvested area peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, the average yield of garlic in France reduced rapidly to 4.5 tons per ha, dropping by -36% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of 7.5 tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average garlic yield failed to regain momentum.
