Despite a small dip in exports in 2014, Canada maintained control of the global canary seed market. In 2014, Canada exported 174 thousand tonnes of canary seed totaling 113 million USD, 4% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Mexico, where it supplied 23% of its total canary seed exports in value terms, accounting for 95% of Mexico's total imports.

Overall, the global canary seed trade was 143 million USD, with a CAGR of 4% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed mixed dynamics, falling from 222 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 217 thousand tonnes in 2014.

In 2014, Mexico (20%), Belgium (13%), Brazil (12%), Spain (7%) and Colombia (6%) were the leading destinations of canary seed imports, together making up 58% of global imports. The share of Colombia increased (+3 percentage points), while the share of Brazil illustrated negative dynamics (-4 percentage points).

Argentina and Belgium were among the other main global suppliers of canary seed in 2014 with a combined 14% share of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Egypt (+42% per year) and India (+40% per year). Argentina strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 4% in 2007 to 7% in 2014.
