Despite a rocky 2014, Belgium continued to lead the way in the global fonio trade. In 2014, Belgium exported 2,197 tonnes of fonio totaling 1,619 thousand USD, 41% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the Netherlands, where it supplied 61% of its total fonio exports in value terms, accounting for the lion's share of the Netherlands' total imports.

In 2013-2014, Belgium was a net exporter of fonio. In these years exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced.

The Netherlands and the United Kingdom were among the other main global suppliers of fonio in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2012 to 2014 were Italy (+305% per year) and Spain (+185% per year).

Belgium's top 5 trading partners in 2014 were the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, with a combined 97% share of Belgium's fonio exports. The share of the Netherlands increased significantly (+42 percentage points), while the share of France illustrated negative dynamics (-26 percentage points).
