Price for Cabbages, Cauliflowers, Kohlrabi, Kale and Similar Edible Brassicas; Fresh or Chilled in South Africa (FOB) - 2023

In December 2023, the average export price for cabbages, cauliflowers, kohlrabi, kale and similar edible brassicas; fresh or chilleds amounted to $422 per ton, stabilizing at the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 39% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $730 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to December 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($2,041 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($173 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for cabbages, cauliflowers, kohlrabi, kale and similar edible brassicas; fresh or chilleds amounted to $2,955 per ton, picking up by 2.7% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for cabbages, cauliflowers, kohlrabi, kale and similar edible brassicas; fresh or chilleds increased by +17.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 244%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $3,326 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($3,274 per ton), while the price for Swaziland ($1,281 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the third year in a row, South Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of cabbages, cauliflowers, kohlrabi, kale and similar edible brassicas; fresh or chilleds, which decreased by -25.7% to 11K tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded a deep setback. The smallest decline of -3.2% was in 2021.

In value terms, exports of cabbages, cauliflowers, kohlrabi, kale and similar edible brassicas; fresh or chilleds reduced dramatically to $4.4M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 13%.
